The result was an expressive yet modular design which adopted proprietary components for speed of construction. The design is fully demountable and reusable, which allows it to be re-erected and altered to suit future events. Of particular note are the peaks and valleys of the ceiling ‘veil’ — an independent sculptural form that allows a level of transparency and porosity — as well as the eponymous “shimmer” effect after dark.

The Shimmerlands Pavilion is a modular, temporary structure that disrupts its typically staid environment with a geometrical play of light and colour. Across two months in summer 2017/18, the pavilion served as festival hub (and bar) for the Shimmerlands festival’s program of music and outdoor cinema at the University of Melbourne. The brief was for a custom solution that would create a distinct sense of spectacle and excitement — and could be erected in ten days, then swiftly disassembled in just four.
