Northwest House

The location of the property was rare, adjacent to the reserve and tucked in a Cul de sac in a leafy quiet spot in Hawthorn East, close to kindergartens and schools.


The opportunity was to design a home amongst nature, providing an interface to the reserve while building a private sanctuary within the property for the family and their extended family to enjoy.


Floodplain regulations dictated entirely lightweight construction. Intuition led us to design a home that was an extension of the old.


The house is planned to extend west, but the north west orientation allows for the house to open equally to the north.

The new northwest facade provides both protection from the summer sun and privacy from neighbours — while the Accoya timber creates a sheer screen for the shadow play cast by local trees.


The rear garden is lawn flanked by productive garden beds and perimeter seat and medium sized trees offering a layer of privacy.

Northwest House

What appeared to be an abandoned bungalow was discovered to be a subtly stunning example of stripped back deco architecture, in the ideallic location immediately adjacent to the park.
 
The existing house was reinvented as the front door entrance for guests. Guests visiting could also be lead through the front garden, around the house to the rear garden and living spaces.

The existing home was historically significant; we were required to design an extension to the existing home that was respectful and not visible from the street. It was the only deco home in an Edwardian neighbourhood.
 
The opportunity was to design a home amongst nature, providing an interface to the reserve while building a retreat within the property for the family and their extended family to enjoy.

The new home was intended to be an evolution of the existing deco home, acknowledging construction methodology, use of lightweight timber cladding and features, timber windows, stucco and a single brick chimney.

The level 01 stair landing is the adults home office and quiet place to read. The space is flanked by a desk with views south towards the city, north towards the central courtyard and over the slate roof of the existing house, main bedroom to the west and guest bedroom to the east.

Double doors allow the bedrooms to open out to the reading space connecting the rooms as one generous space for the parents to retreat.

The convoluted side approach and turn towards the main corridor in the existing Edwardian home at Barkly House, continues into the new living spaces dividing the plan into thirds: Kitchen on the west, lounge in the centre and dining to the east.

In an effort to gain solar access and winter sun into the centre of the living room, a central courtyard was proposed. The courtyard is a garden space that acts as an informal entry ‘around the side’ of the existing house and into the heart of the home.

This north facade flanks the open stair and continues upstairs to the parent’s reading area and bedrooms.

Barkly House kitchen is designed with a direct relationship to the lounge and views across to room to the dining table.

The kitchen island is the arrival point when entering the living area. The island is sculptured to appear as table for entertaining and to gather around.

The island is formed from a quartzite, a robust natural stone that can be enjoyed.

Barkly House is home designed to be lived in.
