This modern extension to an Edwardian bungalow clearly contrasts old and new, with a distinct demarcation in its physical identity. The Ridgeway in Kensington is a street of historical significance; this double-fronted weatherboard home was built in 1914, and occupies a double block typical of the locale. The three bedrooms of the existing house were supplemented by an external guest flat in the backyard; the brief was to create a four bedroom house with a second rumpus room that could double as a fifth bedroom for guests. Our design outcome maximises the benefits of north orientation in the main living rooms. The angular form was shaped to achieve solar access to the existing house. Operable timber batten screens frame the living room whilst allowing natural breezes through. The two-level void allows natural light to permeate the home, bringing a sense of spaciousness to this small footprint extension.
