The Living Quarter

Ha Architecture has created a new model of independent living. Developed as a niche solution for elderly people, The Living Quarter embeds the benefits of communal life while transcending the limitations of traditional aged care. The quadrisection design divides one larger development into a network of four pavilions. These comprise two adjacent dwellings, each with separate public and private program. With no more than 4 residents per dwelling, the design responds to the clear preference of its future occupants. A human scale is achieved, with considered views to greenery within and without — and a harmonious connection to its surroundings. Natural light and openable windows complete the biophilic approach. The centrality of the outdoor table encourages outdoor communal living — it becomes the common hearth of the village. Materials are honest, functional and inviting. The colour palette is warm but subtle — a key point of difference with many Australian aged care facilities.
