Project

Leopold House

Leopold House transforms an existing Victorian terrace that had previously been extended into the adjacent infill property. Our brief was to rebuild the existing extension to become the primary living space — and to do so in a manner reflecting the clients’ expertise in Persian history and culture. The sequence of outdoor spaces was re-imagined to facilitate various entertaining modes across the year. Oatmeal brick became the designated terrain connecting each space. A herringbone brick floor extends the living room outside into the primary east facing courtyard. The brick screen detail is a contemporary solution that reflects the Persian approach to climate: it provides shade while allowing cross-ventilation through the space. Trickling water is used for evaporative cooling. In the front yard, paved garden beds frame the lawn, creating a private sanctuary in which to enjoy the afternoon sun.
