Harry and Viv’s house applies innovative design to create a transcendent, future-proofed family home. When renovating this heritage-listed Edwardian terrace, the exterior focus was to preserve, minimise and integrate. The interior would be a fundamental, experiential transformation. The centrepiece of the house is, quite literally, nothing at all: the narrow front corridor opens onto a void spanning 6m from floor to second-storey ceiling. Natural light pours in through the roof and lightwell. The sense of openness continues to permeate as one progresses towards the rear ground floor. A harmonious flow of colour, materiality and botanical elements combines kitchen, dining and backyard into one Outdoor Room. The island becomes the true hearth of the home. Using borrowed space and biophilia, passive design and exact ergonomics, Harry and Viv’s House sets the standard for small footprint living in the 2020s.
