Architecture, Product & Environment

One of the #hasouthhouse shots from handover early in the year, showing the stairway to the main bedroom.

The 5m wide constraints of a row house generally result in unexpected opportunities to create a sense of space. Out of necessity each function borrows from the next and that interface is where interesting and useful spaces can be created.

More to come on this project very soon…

Revealing some lovely shots of #hasouthhouse from handover early in the year.

The project is a continuation of our thinking around courtyard homes. The south facing rear yard lent itself to an attached pavilion which created new north facing living spaces and courtyard.

The new pavilion to the rear acknowledges the historical stable structures of the neighbourhood while creating an address to the side street.

Progress from Furneaux Distillery, Flinders Island TAS.

Last month the team on site gave the project a push towards completion. The interior for the tasting room, including meticulous formwork for the island bar has been fabricated here in Melbourne by none other than @djmuzz The interior components were fabricated into segments to be packed into a container and shipped to the island. The concrete bar has now been poured and the Blackbutt interior has been installed.

In this picture you can see the north facing entry courtyard to the tasting room underway. The round window in the courtyard wall provides a framed view to the native forest behind the distillery. From the entry courtyard you will have a clear view south through the tasting room to the pristine coastline and The Hazards beyond.
After many projects of varying scales and use, there is still nothing more challenging yet rewarding than unlocking a 5m wide row house’s potential. When you add into the equation south facing rear yard, strict heritage overlay due to the subject site being on a prominent street corner, neighbours, questionable localised planning policy, budget constraints, and then designing through the midst of covid lockdown via zoom, it starts to become a daunting proposition.

After 4 years, with 2 of those years negotiating planning approval, we would like to finally introduce you to #hasouthhouse

A big thank you to our amazingly trusting and supportive clients @chantelmcglade @jason_mcglade 🙏🏽
