Architecture, Product & Environment

A proud Italian heritage inspired this masonry family home, centered around a sunken lounge and adorned with marble and granite.

Designed to embrace its south-facing outlook while maximizing natural light, the home frames select views—extending from the backyard to the city skyline.

A lush side-entry ‘greenhouse’ floods the living spaces with winter sun, enhancing the home’s warmth and character.

The checkerboard floor plan balances function and flow: a south-facing kitchen and dining area seamlessly connect to the rear yard, while the north-facing lounge invites light and openness.

Introducing Barkly House

Conceived during the pandemic through a series of discreet meetings, Barkly House is a brick home designed for the son of a bricklayer.

From the street, the silhouette of the addition presents as a seemingly blank backdrop to the existing home. Strategically set apart, this extension allows solar access over the original home into the living spaces while also creating a discreet side entrance - leading directly to the heart of the house.

At Three Peaks House the brief focused on enhancing the home’s layout to better engage with the backyard, improve the living areas and adapt to the needs of a growing family.

Materiality plays a pivotal role in defining the home’s character. The juxtaposition of durable materials like concrete with the warmth of timber imbues the space with permanence and comfort.

Sam Cooper, project architect at Ha Architecture, reflects on these choices: “Internally, we chose materials that are durable and suit the needs of daily life. Softer elements, such as curtains, subtle colour and a connection to the garden, were added to create a comfortable environment. The calmness and warmth of the living spaces is something that everyone mentions when they first visit.”

Inside, the streamlined kitchen and concealed cabinetry maximise space and enhance tranquility.

Introducing Three Peaks House….

The project is a considered north oriented extension to charming weatherboard home in Preston, for an extension of the Ha_Arc family.

Capitalising on a beautiful north-facing existing rear yard, Three Peaks House emphasises connection to the garden as well as functionality for an evolving family of four.

The language of the two existing gable roof forms was repeated with the third in the rear living / kitchen extension.

We rarely take on projects of this scale, but as a practice we get great satisfaction rethinking a home with a few simple interventions.

This week we gained planning approval for the proposed hotel accommodation at the Mountain View Hotel in Whitfield, VIC in collaboration with @foolscapstudio and @peachy_green_

Mountain View Hotel is at the heart of the King Valley community. Foolscap Studio’s loving revitalisation to the hotel provides a hub which enhances gathering, storytelling, and provides a comforting space for rest.

The accomodation is a well needed boutique accommodation opportunity to support regional tourism to the King Valley, supporting the pub’s established trade.

Looking forward to progressing the project with the Foolscap team in 2025.

One of the #haayrhouse shots from handover early in the year, showing the stairway to the main bedroom.

The 5m wide constraints of a row house generally result in unexpected opportunities to create a sense of space. Out of necessity each function borrows from the next and that interface is where interesting and useful spaces can be created.

More to come on this project very soon…
