Problem or opportunity? In the case of Chamfer House, planning policy catalysed an unexpected design solution. The existing terrace suffered from a lack of natural light; the client brief was for a proposed addition to the south-facing rear, facilitating functional living spaces. But the new policy required no overshadowing of the neighbours’ private open space. Our design solution was to ‘chamfer’ the extension, paring back the angle and creating the dramatic skillion form of the bedroom above. In the new living quarters below, the warmth of natural light and timber balance the clean lines of concrete and marble, glass and steel. At the very heart of the house, a lightwell garden delivers more natural light, cross ventilation and a garden outlook. A whitewash over the entire project completes the connection of old and new to create a fresh, singular experience.
